Thirteen Grand Slam singles champions headline the list of entries announced on Tuesday for the 2020 U.S. Open women's draw, which includes nine players ranked in the world's top 10.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty of Australia is the notable exception, having announced last week that she is skipping the Aug. 31-Sept. 13 Grand Slam event in New York due to COVID-19 concerns.

No. 6 Bianca Andreescu of Canada will be back to defend her title at Flushing Meadows. Last year she defeated Serena Williams, the six-time U.S. Open champion and 23-time Grand Slam winner who is currently ranked No. 9.

With a championship, the 38-year-old Williams -- who also lost in the 2018 final to Japan's Naomi Osaka -- would tie Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

The other entries from the top 10 are No. 2 Simona Halep of Romania, No. 3 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, No. 4 Sofia Kenin, No. 5 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, No. 7 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, No. 8 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and No. 10 Osaka.

Halep is a two-time Grand Slam winner, and Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open. The other Grand Slam winners in the field are Petra Kvitova, Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Sloane Stephens, Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Azarenka and Venus Williams.

Kerber (2016), Kuznetsova (2004), Osaka (2018), Stephens (2017) and Venus Williams (2000, 2001) are former U.S. Open champs.
