Irish budget will cut back on public spending
Toronto News.Net Wednesday 9th December, 2009
Ireland is going ahead with a public service austerity package for its 2010 annual budget.
In an effort to stabilise an ever-growing gap in public finances, the government will slash costs as the country struggles to get its public finances back in control.
Last week, unions representing some 250,000 public servants, offered to convince their members to take 12 days unpaid leave instead of a pay cut.
The offer was rejected by Prime Minister Brian Cowen.
Public sector workers had already been hit with a seven per cent pay cut in an emergency budget in April. Email this story to a friend
