Chinese company starts Myanmar pipeline construction

China National Petroleum Corp has begun the construction of a pipeline across Myanmar.

The pipeline is expected to give the China and Myanmar quicker access to oil supplies.

CNPC has begun work on Maday island in western Myanmar, where the 770 kilometre pipeline will connect the island with Ruili in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan.

The pipeline is expected to initially carry 12 million tonnes of oil a year.
