Heavy losses on Wall Street

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower Thursday after spending the day in and out of positive territory.

At the close of trading the Dow Jones Industrials were down 215.45 points or 2.51% at 8,376.24.

The Nasdaq Composite was down 46.82 points or 3.14% at 1,445.56.

The Standard and Poor's 500 was off 25.52 points or 2.93% at 845.22.

The U.S. dollar was mixed, losing ground to the Europeans. The euro was quoted at 1.2774 in early Asian trading Friday. The ECB dropped official interest rates Thursday.

The Japanese yen was little changed at 92.42. The British pound fell to 1.4680 after the Bank of England lowered official interest rates Thursday. The Swiss franc rose to 1.1952.

The Australin dllar weakened a touch to .6430 while the Canadian dollar weakened sharply to 1.2764.
