California governor reveals whopping budget deficit
The California governor, Jerry Brown, has announced the state's projected budget deficit has been blown out.
Governor Brown has revealed a hole of $16 billion which he says will require drastic spending cuts.
Administrators had earlier forecast a $9.2 billion deficit.
Announcing the deficit on Saturday, the governor said he would have to make cuts "far greater than I asked for at the beginning of the year."
The revised spending plan, which may include tax hikes, will be announced on Monday when the Democratic governor will have to explain to the legislature why he has not been able to bring the budget under control.
The State's Democratic legislators declined to approve budget reductions Brown had asked for in March
California's financial troubles have deteriorated since then due to hundreds of millions of dollars in budget cuts to healthcare programs being blocked by the federal government.
Public health and education commentators have already voiced concerns about likely cuts to their areas of interest.
Many educational institutions have already asked for more state funds...not less.
